The Message is Hope

First Alliance Church

We have been back just over a month from our mission trip to Peru but I continue to mull over moments from our time there. I thought I would share one such moment out loud with you this week.

We were finishing up a session of VBS at one of the ministries when I noticed one of our team members standing, staring off into the vast trash dump literally right across the street. “Come play soccer with us!” I yelled. “No, I just need to stand here for a little bit,” they called back. I thought nothing of it until that evening during our debrief session.

“As I looked out at the trash dump today,” they reflected, “and thought of the men, women, and children who have to breathe in the burning waste day and night, I thought come quickly Lord Jesus.”

“Have you ever said that phrase before? Come quickly Lord Jesus. Personally, I have hardly ever thought about that. Why? It’d be nice if Jesus were to come back. It’d be awesome if he returned before I died, but my life is pretty good. I never feel the need to say, come quickly. I’m just being honest with you. I don’t know a life where burning trash floods my nostrils everyday, where I have to scrounge for food, and where I am desperate enough to cry out for help. In a world of #firstworldprobs and #blessed living, that thought, come quickly Jesus, rarely comes to mind.

I had several different beautiful and eloquent ways to end this little devotional thought, but have decided to be short and blunt: I rarely think come quickly Lord Jesus, and that needs to change.
