Last week, while you were listening to Paul talk about “Why Bethlehem?”, we were upstairs in KES (our 10:45 am ministry with 1st-4th graders) talking about a similar topic. In our current Christmas Prophecy unit, we looked at Micah 5:2, written 700 years before the birth of Jesus and yet speaking of the specific place where the Messiah would be born.

Each kid received a small plastic puzzle (which all turned out to be much harder than I thought they would…) and instructions on how to assemble it. As complicated as the puzzle was to put together, we talked about how much more difficult the task of getting everything to work out for Joseph and Mary to safely make it to Bethlehem (think: I’ve got to get to Louisville – ON FOOT!), find a place to stay (think: there are thousands of people arriving in Wilmore, and only room for a hundred), have the baby at the right time (think: what baby is ever born when we say?) – you get the idea. On and on we could go examining the logistics of this historic event. It’s amazing how God orchestrated so much and had it fit together to bring about the birth of Jesus.

The point we ended up with together was to be reminded – and convinced – of our amazing God, his intimate knowledge of our lives, and his ability to literally move heaven and earth to accomplish his good purposes, both great and small. One of my favorite verses that we looked at together is Colossians 1:17 – “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

No matter what your life looks like leading up to the holidays, you can be assured that he is holding you together. Personal issues, family struggles, life uncertainties, past tragedies – none of this takes our God by surprise or is beyond his scope of care and power. Let the reality of the circumstances of Jesus’ birth and the truth of His powerful Word bring your heart and mind the peace and comfort of the promised Messiah in this month of Advent.
