Date:  December 13, 2015

Speaker:  Steve Elliott

Text:  Matthew 1

“People never gossip about the secret virtues of others.”     Bertrand Russell (1872-1970)

Imagine a couple under the whole town’s disapproving spotlight trying to explain their circumstance with stories of angels and dreams.

“You find out who your real friends are when you’re involved in a scandal”     Elizabeth Taylor  (1932-2011)

  • Tamar was a Canaanite married to Judah, one of the sons of Jacob.
  • Rahab was a Canaanite prostitute in Jericho.
  • Ruth was a Moabite.
  • Bathsheba was the former wife of Uriah the Hittite, another Canaanite

“So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers.”     Hebrews 2:10

…Jesus is not ashamed of his family tree.

The Big News of Christmas:

1.Jesus is not ashamed to be seen as a brother to you or me!

“God is not ashamed to be called their God.”

Hebrews 11:16

1.Jesus is not ashamed to be seen as a brother to you or me!

2.God wants to include you in his Divine genealogy.

3.We get to see what righteousness looks like.

But Joseph displays a righteousness that is not legalistic or antiseptic.

We just need to look at how Joseph lives and we see what rightly related living looks like.

If we obey what God is speaking to us about, then God will speak to us some more. And if we don’t obey, we shouldn’t wonder if it’s been a long time since we’ve seen angels

Joseph never says a word in the whole Bible!

1.Jesus is not ashamed to be seen as a brother to you or me!

2.God wants to include you in his Divine genealogy.

3.We get to see what righteousness looks like.

4.Righteousness looks a lot like humility.
