The Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons will be here in the blink of an eye! In addition to celebrations, these are also times when we focus on giving.Whether it’s change in the red kettle, coats to the sheriff, or shoe boxes full of supplies, there is no end to the opportunities available to us to lend a hand and help those in need.
Traditionally at First Alliance, we’ve we’ve focused on a few holiday campaigns, one in particular being the shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. This year, we’ll be moving away from that program in order to focus our giving opportunities on local ministries and organizations where we hope to begin new or continue to develop existing relationships.
(As a side note, there are also organizational and methodological factors related to Operation Christmas Child that have influenced our decision to not promote their shoe box program this year. You can read examples of those here or here. While we understand that this is not a reflection of the entire Operation Christmas Child program, we encourage you to do your own research to determine your response regarding participating in their campaign this year.)
In the very near future, you’ll hear and see details about two opportunities for giving and involvement during the holidays. One is providing food baskets for Christmas to selected families at the Wellington and Booker T. schools, where we’ve been partners for many years. Another option will be Christmas gift lists for families involved at Common Good, part of the Embrace church downtown.
However you choose to be involved, remember it’s ultimately about the people. When we serve food, give clothing, donate money, hold a hand, or offer a smile and a kind word, we’re being Jesus to a person, created in God’s image, who might not otherwise get to receive that kind of blessing in their life. “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40)
