The Message is Hope

First Alliance Church

In June 2012 I was fortunate enough to be in a room with 400 college students praising God. It was the loudest worship experience I’ve ever been a part of, but it wasn’t because of the music. Students were losing their voices and worshipping with a vitality I had never seen. It was a taste of Heaven. The next year I was excited to return and experience this once again, but it left me feeling empty.

What I learned was: it was different, the people were different, and I was different. Yet I wanted last year. Often we want our spiritual lives to live in a sense of spiritual nostalgia and we are disappointed when our memories are not fulfilled. This doesn’t produce growth and keeps us in a state of infancy.

This January our church will be experiencing something very different. The 2019 Winter Retreat is our first joint event with FAC Middle School and High School Ministry. Typically for a retreat, we drive off to a campground tucked away in the woods where we can escape the busyness of our daily lives. This retreat is different. Students will be staying in host homes and travel to the church for our worship sessions. We are not taking away cell phones, TV’s or WiFi. Instead, we will give students an opportunity to choose for themselves how to spend their time and what will be the focus of their hearts. The mission of the Church begins in the home.

This was a powerful experience for FAC Middle School Ministry at the start of 2018 and we are excited about expanding it into the High School Ministry. Last year included 8 host homes, 62 adults, 71 students, 76 car rides and countless prayers, but this year is different and we are praying expectantly and doubling everything!
