A week from now, my family will be heading out on a 6,000 mile one-month trip. We’re in the final stages of planning meals and equipment and sights we’ll see. We’ll hit numerous national parks, camps and hotels along the way, and be in the van together around 90 hours (yeow). We’ve been talking about The Trip for around six years, and it’s hard to believe it’s actually happening.
Along the way together, we’ll be going through a journal to focus our thoughts and discussion. One aspect of the journal is how it makes the distinction between The Trip and The Journey. The Trip is where we’ll go, what we’ll see, and what we’ll experience together. The Journey refers to our relationships (with each other and with God) and how The Trip impacts us and changes us. The Trip will come to an end, but The Journey lasts a lifetime.
My next thoughts were originally going to focus on this concept of The Trip/The Journey. But that all faded away with the news of our brother Dan Boycott’s passing yesterday. His Trip here on earth in a physical body has ended. His Journey has begun an unimaginable new chapter. Dan’s joy for life, his love for Jesus, and his passion to impact The Kingdom were evident to all who knew him. And regardless of all he DID during his years with us, he would want us all to focus on the object of his Journey – Jesus.
The encouragement for me is that when The Trip becomes difficult, boring, frustrating, or not what we bargained for, the focus is always Jesus and our Journey with Him. He is our peace, He is our purpose, He is our joy, He is our life. Thank you, Dan, for your example of a life lived to the fullest walking with the Savior. Well done, good and faithful servant.
