Growing up, if the doors were open, my family was at church. It felt like we were always there and by no means was I a compliable participant each week. I would get in trouble in Sunday school, sleep through entire sermons and routinely tell my parents that it “was not fun” in an attempt to get out of going. What I didn’t realize was that my parents were fearless. They must have heard the voices in their heads say, “You’re forcing God on them,”or “They will resent you for this later.”
But God called my parents to raise six kids to know Him, and my parents answered that call by being fearless.
Each summer we remind middle school students that God has called us to share His love and give them an opportunity to do just that in a big way. Preschool VBS is a program that started 5 years ago and is the only VBS that I know of that is entirely planned and orchestrated by students. They pick the theme, the lessons, the music, the games, the crafts and serve as the staff to young preschoolers. It doesn’t always go as planned and that’s ok. On paper, it is the most terrifying thing—40 middle school students and 40 preschoolers for 1 week. However, if you saw it, you would be amazed at how smoothly it works.
We do this for the following 2 reasons: it teaches students that they can serve the Church and gives them a safe place to practice telling someone about God. How can we expect our kids to be the light in their schools, on their teams or in our homes if we do not give them the training and the example to fearlessy walk with God?
My prayer for you today is that you stop replaying God’s calling for your life and fearlessly take action. He may be calling you to reach out to someone, volunteer or share your faith. You have probably practiced and planned what you might say or do, but fear is holding you back. Don’t let it. He’s already called you. Will you trust Him?
